"ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?"
Sadly we must leave Sorrento behind, but with a sense of anticipation, we head north on the autostrada to Rome. We had planned to stay at an Airbnb apartment right next to the Trevi fountain - so very central to all the must-do highlights of this ancient capital city. However - you know what they say about the best laid plans! A few days ago we got a message from our hosts at this Airbnb to say that their very ancient building had some issues - the cellar below was collapsing! Not much one can do about that - we had to find somewhere else very quickly. I have to say that Airbnb were very helpful - and we managed to secure a beautiful alternative apartment just north of the Tiber river. It was a much more expensive option - but Airbnb agreed to pick up the difference.
So, drama over, and now it's time to go for a look around. We planned to do a tour of the Colosseum first. We had wisely chosen to pre-book our "skip-the-line" tickets. The queue for those that didn't was about a mile long!
In good shape for something almost 2000 years old! (the Colosseum that is)
I feel like I am standing on the arena floor, victorious with my bloodied sword in hand, looking up at the riotous crowd and shouting the question.....ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?
But I think someone beat me to it.
The Vittoriano or "Altar of the Fatherland"
Crossing the bridge over the Tiber river - as we approach the Castel Sant'Angelo
Brenda posing before one of the three very imposing fountains that grace the Piazza Novona
For our lunch in the Piazza - Spaghetti alla gricia for Brenda, and Risotto with red prawns for me.
After lunch, we head down the narrow alleyways surrounding the square. Some retail therapy is needed as I have been looking for a some time now to buy a suitable pressie for Brenda's forthcoming birthday (now just a week away). With a little help from Brenda - mission accomplished! More on that later, right now our sore feet need some resting up and we head back to our very comfy new apartment where I know a chilled bottle of Limoncello is waiting!
